Unit 2
To convert means to change into another form
Converting means this action.
In the plastics industries:
Converting means secondary processes which means the manufacturing of finished products from basic material such as plastic sheet or film, paper and aluminium foil.
Converter: is a person or company who buys these materials and sells finished products after printing and or manufacturing.
Converters are companies that specialize in combining raw materials such as polyesters, adhesives, tapes, foams, plastics, felts, rubbers, liners and metals, as well as other materials, to create new products. Many converters also specialize in die-cutting materials into finished parts or labels. Some converters also offer printing services.
Primary processing on the other hand means the manufacture of the basic materials but people engaging in the work are generally called plastic film, paper and aluminium foil makers.
What is converting?
First, the biaxially oriented polypropylene film produced by the film maker is printed. Next, an adhesive is applied on the printed film. Then the film is laminated with an aluminium metallized cast polypropylene film and cut to a constant width by slitting. Finally, it is wound on to roll styles. The food maker automatically inserts ice lollies into the package and seals it. The process of printing, metallizing laminating, and slitting of the film is called converting.
Here let's redefine "Converting is to give new processing and to yield new values on the rolls that are wound thin substrates which are plastic film / sheet, paper, foil (including aluminium foil), cloth, etc ... That is to say, converting is the manufacturing technology by which a continuous roll of substrate is made into a roll type manufactured product by many kinds of processes. Furthermore, converting utilizes the related technologies such as rewinding, winding, slitting, drying, and hardening in pre – and post – processing.
